Big Four Japanese law firm Mori Hamada & Matsumoto has bolstered its international dispute resolution practice with the hire of New York-admitted attorney Misaki Kodama, who was most recently a deputy director at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), as a foreign lawyer in Tokyo.

Kodama worked at the multilateral trade system department at METI's trade policy bureau for five years on matters relating to the anti-dumping agreement and government procurement agreement, as well as free trade and economic partnership negotiations on trade agreements. Additionally, she focused on matters involving World Trade Organization dispute settlement procedures for parties and third parties as the lead attorney in charge.

Prior to her stint at METI, Kodama was an associate at Shearman & Sterling in Tokyo, where she worked on matters relating to securities law, internal investigations, cartels and dispute resolution, for four years. From 2010 to 2011, Kodama also worked at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva as an advisor, where she was in charge of trade and development.
