Spring in Hong Kong saw a flurry of legal events, one of which was the inauguration of the Hong Kong branch of the Shanghai International Arbitration Center—its first branch outside of mainland China. 

In a speech on May 5, 2024 marking the occasion, Hong Kong’s deputy justice secretary, Horace Cheung, said the move would not only secure Hong Kong’s status in international law and dispute resolution in the Asia-Pacific region but also help China expand its reach in the global arbitration and mediation arena.
