France’s new appeals court chamber for climate litigation has issued its first three rulings, finding that two energy giants will have to face complaints filed by nongovernmental organizations over their compliance with a 2017 law creating due diligence obligations.

The Paris Court of Appeals’ chamber 5-12 ruled that TotalEnergies must face a lawsuit filed five years ago by NGOs and local governments that attempted to force the company to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.
