It being Pride month, many are discussing the importance of transparency in the workplace. Even though today there is increased awareness around what it may be like to be part of both the LGBTQ+ and the legal communities, a hesitancy amongst lawyers in revealing in the workplace that they are part of the LGBTQ+ community remains.

Although the word ‘transparency’ is often used, I prefer the word ‘visibility.’ It is not just about being open, frank and transparent but also about being seen and visible which inspires. Every person who identifies as LGBTQ+ needs to be comfortable around whether they want to come out—or not—but it is a powerful first step in effectively living who you are. It is always inspiring to see LGBTQ+ individuals being their authentic selves at work, especially those who take on a personal responsibility to be visible and empower others to follow suit should they so wish.
