'Deeply Reactive': Are Law Firms Becoming Increasingly Hostile to Leavers?
Top London partners, ex-lawyers and support staff talk about the averse situations law firms designed to make their exit difficult and how it speaks to the wider issue of clawback in present-day partnerships.

As London's legal sector continues to face rising pressure from talent wars, law firms are employing different tactics to retain and attract lawyers.
This can include changing pay structures to reward top performers, enhancing bonus systems, offering loyalty payments, or 'golden handcuffs' as some call it. But another tactic which some say is in increasing use is imposing tighter policies on potential leavers to minimise departures. This can mean longer gardening leave periods, punitive non-competition clauses and a variety of profit claw back mechanisms.

The suit, accusing the defendant of selling knock-off Graco products, was filed Dec. 18 in New Jersey District Court by Rivkin Radler on behalf of Graco Inc. and Graco Minnesota. Yalowitz of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer have entered their appearances for Hanaco Venture Capital and its executives, Lior Prosor and David Frankel, in a pending securities lawsuit. The action, filed on Dec. 24 in New York Southern District Court by Zell, Aron & Co. on behalf of Goldeneye Advisors, accuses the defendants of negligently and fraudulently managing the plaintiff's $1 million investment.
