The legal profession regulator in the Canadian province of Manitoba is drawing widespread criticism from across the bar after it handed down a six-month suspension to a Canadian lawyer who punched a trainee in the groin—a sentence many deem too lenient.

“This lawyer assaulted an articling student and already has a disciplinary record for sexually harassing a client. And only suspended for 6 months???” employment and human rights lawyer Kathryn Marshall wrote on LinkedIn—one of dozens of lawyers to comment on the ruling.
