Canada’s largest grocery chain has agreed to pay CA$500 million (US$360 million) to settle a class action over its involvement in a bread price-fixing scheme, an antitrust settlement lawyers describe as the largest in Canadian history.

Plaintiffs allege Loblaw Companies Ltd and its parent George Weston Ltd participated in a 14-year-long, industry-wide conspiracy to artificially increase the price of packaged bread. They were represented by six firms in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec—Strosberg Wingfield Sasso, Orr Taylor, Renno & Vathilakis, LPC Avocats, CFM Lawyers, and Boudreau Law—who agreed to a mediation process overseen by Ontario Superior Court Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz.
