Hogan Lovells is set to exit South Africa after a decade struggling to establish a presence in Johannesburg, a difficult period that saw the law firm’s name connected to a high-level corruption scandal although it was never charged.

The Johannesburg move is part of a wider shutdown that will see Hogan Lovells close three offices, including Warsaw and Sydney, and lose 65 lawyers. At least nine of those lawyers are based in South Africa. Two of its African partners described the Johannesburg closure as a long time coming.
