The EU's General Court today upheld a ban barring law firms from advising the Russian government, Russian companies, and individuals on routine business matters.

The General Court, the bloc's second-highest court for EU law matters, today found that the 2022 ban does not violate the EU fundamental rights guaranteeing access to legal advice from a lawyer. The judges emphasised that the ban prohibits legal advice related to non-contentious matters but made it clear that lawyers can continue to advise Russian entities and individuals on contentious matters.
