The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into allegations that Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok failed to prevent meddling in Romania's presidential election.

The Commission said today that it will investigate allegations that TikTok violated the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) by failing to properly assess and mitigate systemic risks linked to election integrity, notably in the context of the Romanian presidential elections on November 24.“The opening of formal proceedings does not prejudge its outcome,” it added. The EU Digital Services Act came into force two years ago.
