Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday he will step down as leader of the country and the Liberal Party of Canada once a successor has been chosen. The move leaves the country with a weak government ahead of incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of massive tariffs across the board.

Trudeau said the president of the Liberal Party has begun the process for a new leadership race but there’s no timeline yet for the process. A new party leader will automatically become prime minister until an election is called. Trudeau remains prime minister of Canada during the leadership process.
