Former Mayer Brown corporate lawyer Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU), is the clear frontrunner and favorite to lead the next German government amid a wider anti-incumbent wave and Europe’s shift to the right.

Merz studied law at Bonn, the capital of West Germany at the time, and started his career as a regional judge in 1986.

After being elected to the European Parliament and then the Bundestag, Merz was seen as a rising star within the CDU before he was outmaneuvered by his longtime rival, former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and banished to the political bankbenches in 2004.
