Amal Clooney may be the most famous practicing lawyer in the world, and she’s certainly the most photographed. But is she actually a good lawyer?

In some ways, it’s the wrong question. Simply being Amal Clooney—wife of the actor George Clooney—makes her an effective advocate in international human rights cases.
For example, thousands of people in grocery store checkout lines who had never heard of the Maldives now know that its ex-president, Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected leader of the archipelago nation, has been imprisoned on dubious charges.
