A&O keeps on 87% of NQs as retention rates begin to recover

Allen & Overy (A&O) has retained 87% of its March 2010 qualifying intake, marking an increase on the firm's projected retention rate. The magic circle firm has offered roles to 55 of the 63 trainees who applied, from a total intake of 66.

BarCap retains 100% of trainees after first-ever in-house TCs

Barclays Capital's (BarCap) first-ever legal graduate trainees have successfully completed their training contracts, with all five being retained by the investment bank. The trainees undertook four six-month rotations among teams within BarCap's London finance and business departments. Although they benefited from some training from BarCap's panel of regular legal advisers - which includes several magic circle outfits - they did not undertake any private practice seats.

Camerons retains 77% of September qualifying intake

CMS Cameron McKenna has kept on 77% of its September qualifiers, a retention rate that places the firm largely in line with figures reported by its City competitors this summer. The firm offered 21 out of 30 newly-qualified trainees jobs as associates, while also finding alternative roles for two of the other qualifiers, with one staying on as a paralegal and one hired as an assistant to Camerons general counsel Craig Perry.

Linklaters is holding onto 50 of its 66 trainees due to qualify in September, giving it a retention rate of 75%. Of the 66 qualifying three resigned before the process started, which would give the magic circle firm a retention rate of 79% when based only on those applying for jobs.

SJ Berwin has offered places to 71% of its qualifying trainees this September, with the City firm set to take on 27 out of a total of 38 trainees after the summer. Last year the firm had an acceptance rate of 89%, retaining 32 out of a total of 36 trainees.

Herbert Smith set to retain 74% of September trainee intake

Herbert Smith has retained 48 of its 65 trainees set to qualify this September, equating to 74% of its intake. The retention rate represents a significant drop on last year's figure, when the firm kept on 45 out of 49 (92%) trainees. The firm's March intake earlier this year saw 26 out of 31 (84%) taken on.

Freshfields pays out after 70% trainee retention

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is to give a no-strings cash payment to trainees not offered a job after it emerged that the City firm will take on only 70% of its qualifying trainees in September. The move comes as the magic circle law firm confirmed that 70% of its current September qualifying class - around 34 out of 50 - will be offered a position.This number is significantly down on last September's intake, which saw a 91% retention rate. Freshfields took on 86% of trainees qualifying in March.
