Publisher BNA Inc. faced a problem in the mid-2000s when looking to relocate from Washington to Crystal City, Va. The company that owns the majority of office space in Crystal City nearly always leases rather than sells, said BNA General Counsel Eunice Lin, and BNA was looking to buy.

But the publisher had an ace in its hand: DLA Piper partner Jay Epstien, who is among the most highly regarded real estate attorneys in Washington. “I don’t think we would have been able to do that deal without Jay paving the way with his connections and professionalism,” Lin said.
