Here's what happened during Alyson Barker's first few months at the helm of a legal department: The company's board fired its top executive, faced a rare securities maneuver that replaced a majority of its board, and was served with an employment-discrimination class action.

To amplify matters, Barker is her own legal department at The Wet Seal Inc. — the sole in-house lawyer at the young women's fashion retailer, which has more than 525 stores nationwide and trades on Nasdaq with a market capitalization of more than $300 million.
