Taylor Wessing has become the latest law firm to establish a presence in Indonesia after tying up with local outfit Hanafiah Ponggawa & Partners (HPRP).
The association, which will see the two firms share know-how and resources, comes as a string of foreign firms look to Indonesia – one of Asia's fastest-growing economies – for new work.
The cooperation is being spearheaded by Taylor Wessing's Singapore member firm RHT Law Taylor Wessing, which in July said it would soon be announcing formal alliances in four South East Asian markets.
The Singapore firm, which combined with Taylor Wessing in 2011, is also planning to secure tie-ups with local firms in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, as it seeks to grow the Taylor Wessing brand in the ASEAN region.
"This past year has seen significant growth for Taylor Wessing," said Tan Chong Huat, the Singapore firm's managing partner and a member of Taylor Wessing's international management board.
"Our partnership with HPRP will give a tremendous boost to our regional Southeast Asian practice, and it will add value and counsel to our clients, many of whom are Indonesian or have a presence in Indonesia."
Other law firms to secure tie ups in Indonesia this year include Clyde & Co, which partnered with Lubis Ganie Surowidjojo (LGS) in September, DLA Piper, which signed an agreement with Ivan Almaida Baely & Firmansyah (IAB&F) in May, and White & Case, which in January secured an association with MD & Partners.
The country, currently Southeast Asia's largest economy, has proved popular for firms specialising in projects and transactional work, though it continues to ban international players from practising Indonesian law independently.
Taylor Wessing, which has made clear its plans to expand in Asia, said it also has plans to open a Hong Kong office in the future. Existing offices in the region include Shanghai and Beijing.
