Clyde & Co is set to launch an office in Hamburg, with the hire of a four-partner shipping team from Ince & Co.
The firm has recruited Ince's head of English law in Hamburg Daniel Jones, insurance litigation partner Tim Schommer, Hamburg energy and admiralty head Eckehard Volz and shipping and insurance partner Volker Lucke to launch its second base in Germany after it opened in Duesseldorf in 2016.
Commenting on the appointments, Clydes senior partner Simon Konsta said: "The hiring of this top marine, trade and energy team and the opening of our second office in Germany is in line with our strategy to build and strengthen our global platform by hiring the best lawyers across our core sectors.
"Germany is a hugely important market for our clients and is the biggest economy in Europe, so we are excited about building on the success of our Dusseldorf office, which launched 18 months ago."
Clydes partner Andrew Preston added: "With the hiring of this team we've added one of the top marine groups in Germany and secured a strong presence in a key European shipping hub, which is a major centre for owners, operators, trading houses and marine insurers."
Ince senior partner Jan Heuvels said: "Over the last two years we have successfully restructured our business, including the adoption of a hybrid lockstep remuneration model that rewards our highest performing partners. This will inevitably result in certain partners seeking other opportunities."
Following the resignations, Ince confirmed it has promoted three Hamburg-based lawyers to partner, including Gotz Rahne, Christian Reinert and Martin Malinowski to partner. Rahne will co-lead Ince's English law offering, alongside energy and shipping partner Simon Spark who is currently on secondment in Hamburg from London. Reinert will lead the firm's energy & infrastructure team, while Malinowski will head the yachts team.
Clydes has been on an expansive recruitment drive in the US during recent months, hiring a 10-strong team in Miami and a nine-lawyer team in Washington DC. This followed the hire of a 90-strong insurance and litigation team from collapsed insurance firm Sedgwick, including 15 partners, in December 2017.
Meanwhile, Ince has seen changes in its management with the appointment of HR director and former Royal Navy barrister Andrew Jameson as its first London head.
Clydes was approached for comment.
