The Transfer Window: latest partner hires for Ashurst, White & Case, DLA and Hogan Lovells

Hogan Lovells has recruited Kemp Little data protection and privacy head Nicola Fulford for its London privacy and cybersecurity practice.
Fulford, who has been at Kemp Little for more than four years after joining in late 2013, has also worked in-house at UBS and carried out secondments at Google and IBM.
Hogan Lovells global government regulatory head Alice Valder Curran said: "Nicola is a highly-regarded data privacy specialist with an established reputation. We have seen the increasing importance that data protection laws and policy decisions have on our clients' operations in the last few years. Adding Nicola to our existing team will boost our offering and enable us to respond to this growing demand."
Meanwhile, the transatlantic firm has also appointed corporate partner Xenia Legendre as its new office managing partner for Paris, as her predecessor Marie-Aimee de Dampierre becomes regional managing partner for continental Europe. Legendre, who joined the Paris office as a partner in 2008, works with multinational groups and investment funds to structure their cross border transactions.
Ashurst has bolstered its Frankfurt office with the hire of disputes partner Nicolas Nohlen from Hengeler Mueller. His practice covers a broad spectrum of commercial litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, in particular, in relation to corporate, capital market and commercial law disputes as well as banking and product liability.
The firm has also hired Mayer Brown construction partner Tom Duncan in London. Duncan's practice focuses on all aspects of construction and engineering law, with a particular focus on complex disputes.
DWF has strengthened its Italian corporate practice with the hire of partner Giovanni Cucchiarto to its Milan office. He joins from local firm Jenny Avvocati, specialises in M&A and plans to launch a financial technology practice in the base in north Italy.
The firm has also hired employment partner Dermot Casserly to its Dublin office. Casserly joins from national firm Beauchamps where he was head of the firm's employment and benefits group. He has a focus on advising large and mid-size corporates, public bodies and senior executives on risk management, redundancy issues, contracts and work permits.
DLA Piper has hired capital markets partner Roland Maass to join its Frankfurt office from Latham & Watkins, where Maass had been a partner since 2006. Maass will join the firm's corporate practice alongside associate Juliane Hack.
The firm has also bolstered its Beijing corporate practice with the hire of Shearman & Sterling's capital markets partner Yang Ge. She has extensive experience with both US and Hong Kong IPOs of companies in various industries, representing both issuers and underwriters.
Shoosmiths has boosted its banking and finance team with the hire of Gowling WLG project finance head Nick Iliff. He will join Shoosmiths' Birmingham office to develop the firm's real estate finance practice. Prior to joining Gowling WLG, he was head of UK project finance at Pinsent Masons.
Fladgate has appointed David Breslin as a partner in its dispute resolution team. International arbitration and insurance-focused Breslin joins from Gowling WLG, where he led the firms international arbitration and insurance teams. He specialises in the marine, energy and infrastructure sector.
TLT has boosted its Glasgow office with the hire of banking partner Douglas Gourlay from Weightmans, where he established its Scottish banking team and led the firm's UK real estate finance practice. His practice includes advising banks, alternative lenders and borrowers on all kinds of investment and development deals in sectors including student accommodation, retail, hotels and leisure and renewable energy.
White & Case has hired private equity lawyer Shane McDonald, from Lone Star-affiliate Hudson Advisors, as a partner in its City banking team. Formerly an associate at Freshfields and later at Ropes & Gray, McDonald has been senior vice-president of Hudson Advisors since 2013. His experience at Hudson Advisors involved advising on the acquisitions of non-performing loan portfolios and private equity portfolio companies.
Dentons has appointed Nieves Briz as managing partner of its Barcelona office and partner in its Spanish corporate and M&A department. Briz joins from Spanish firm JAUSAS where she was partner in the commercial law and compliance departments and led the China desk. Prior to joining JAUSAS, she became the first female partner at local firm EY Abogados when she joined the partnership in 2000. She has a focus on the finance, real estate, pharmaceutical, textiles and electricity sectors.
Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has hired Kirkland & Ellis acquisition finance partner Christine Kaniak in its Munich base. She advises on complex national and international financings in private equity transactions, as well as on acquisition financings, refinancings and restructurings.
CMS has bolstered its financial services regulatory team with the hire of Norton Rose Fulbright partner Elisabeth Bremner. She has 20 years' experience and expertise in dealing with financial regulators, and matters involving market abuse, insider trading and trader mis-marking in the investment banking and hedge fund sectors.
Strange & Butler has appointed Pinsent Masons former head of competition, Ben Lasserson. Following qualification at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, he had stints at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, moving to Pinsents in 2013. His client roster is made up of major international airlines including Lufthansa, Qatar and Etihad.

J. Brugh Lower of Gibbons has entered an appearance for industrial equipment supplier Devco Corporation in a pending trademark infringement lawsuit. The suit, accusing the defendant of selling knock-off Graco products, was filed Dec. 18 in New Jersey District Court by Rivkin Radler on behalf of Graco Inc. and Graco Minnesota. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi, is 3:24-cv-11294, Graco Inc. et al v. Devco Corporation.

Yalowitz of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer have entered their appearances for Hanaco Venture Capital and its executives, Lior Prosor and David Frankel, in a pending securities lawsuit. The action, filed on Dec. 24 in New York Southern District Court by Zell, Aron & Co. on behalf of Goldeneye Advisors, accuses the defendants of negligently and fraudulently managing the plaintiff's $1 million investment. Attorneys from A&O Shearman has stepped in as defense counsel for Toronto-Dominion Bank and other defendants in a pending securities class action. The suit, filed Dec. 11 in New York Southern District Court by Bleichmar Fonti & Auld, accuses the defendants of concealing the bank's 'pervasive' deficiencies in regards to its compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and the quality of its anti-money laundering controls. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, is 1:24-cv-09445, Gonzalez v. The Toronto-Dominion Bank et al.

Crown Castle International, a Pennsylvania company providing shared communications infrastructure, has turned to Luke D. Wolf of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani to fend off a pending breach-of-contract lawsuit. The court action, filed Nov. 25 in Michigan Eastern District Court by Hooper Hathaway PC on behalf of The Town Residences LLC, accuses Crown Castle of failing to transfer approximately $30,000 in utility payments from T-Mobile in breach of a roof-top lease and assignment agreement. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Susan K. Declercq, is 2:24-cv-13131, The Town Residences LLC v. T-Mobile US, Inc. et al.

Wilfred P. Coronato and Daniel M. Schwartz of McCarter & English have stepped in as defense counsel to Electrolux Home Products Inc. in a pending product liability lawsuit. The court action, filed Nov. 26 in New York Eastern District Court by Poulos Lopiccolo PC and Nagel Rice LLP on behalf of David Stern, alleges that the defendant's refrigerators’ drawers and shelving repeatedly break and fall apart within months after purchase.
