Addleshaw Goddard and Howard Kennedy have been called in to advise as HMV enters administration.

HMV Retail Limited and HMV Ecommerce Limited, which operates 128 stores across the UK and employs about 2,000 permanent staff, entered administration this week.

Addleshaws is advising administrators KPMG, with its team including business support and restructuring partners Fraser Ritson and Alison Goldthorp.

HMV previously went into administration in 2013, at which point magic circle firm Linklaters took the lead legal role, with Deloitte appointed as administrators.

The company was bought by Hilco Capital, which has now called in Howard Kennedy to advise on the current administration.

The music and entertainment company has become the latest victim within an ailing high street sector.

Last year, a number of high street companies underwent restructurings as they continued to struggle in a difficult retail climate – with an array of law firms picking up roles.

DLA Piper advised as Gourmet Burger Kitchen underwent a CVA, while White & Case, Pinsent Masons and Shoosmiths picked up roles on the administration of fashion retailer Coast.

During the summer, DIY retailer Homebase also entered a CVA and was advised by Kirkland & Ellis. Gaucho Steakhouse also entered administration, calling in Hogan Lovells and Pinsent Masons as legal advisers.
