Ex-SJ Berwin partners lead for US firms on $1bn private equity deal
London offices of US firms take lead roles on Investcorp's deal with Coller

The London offices of O'Melveny & Myers and Goodwin have taken the key roles on a $1bn private equity funds deal that saw former partners from legacy law firm SJ Berwin come together again.
Bahrain asset manager Investcorp, advised by Goodwin private equity funds partner and former SJ Berwin partner Michael Halford (pictured), has transferred a handful of its assets into a new $1bn fund, which is backed by UK private equity secondaries firm Coller Capital. Private equity partner Richard Lever, another ex-SJ Berwin partner, also advised.
O'Melveny London funds partner John Daghlian, another former SJ Berwin partner, led the team acting for long-term client Coller. He was supported by funds partner Aleksander Bakic, tax partner Jan Birtwell and Christian Riis-Madsen, managing partner of O'Melveny's Brussels office.
Daghlian was one of the first generation of private equity partners to move to a US firm, joining O'Melveny's London office in 2004.
Legacy firm SJ Berwin had a highly regarded private equity funds practice prior to its merger with Asia-Pacific firm King & Wood Mallesons in 2013, but the UK arm collapsed four years later.
Lever joined Goodwin in 2015 and Halford made the same move the following year.
US firms now dominate the rankings for leading private equity funds lawyers in the UK, holding about two thirds of the top positions in legal directories.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
