Jones Day City private equity partner Neil Ferguson has resigned from the firm to join US rival Latham & Watkins, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Ferguson joined legacy firm Gouldens in 1996, which later merged with Jones Day to form the US firm's London base.

Clients he worked with at the firm included Goldman Sachs and Bain Capital Credit, and he also spent time on secondment at Morgan Stanley as general counsel for its London real estate division.

He was part of the Jones Day team that advised on GVC Holdings' £3.9bn offer to buy rival bookmaker Ladbrokes Coral in 2017, and he acted on the £400m Shariah-compliant financing of the redevelopment of King's Reach Tower on London's South Bank five years prior to that.

His hire is the second lateral pickup for Latham's City office in 2019. In January, it boosted its ranks with Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft finance partner Jeremiah Wagner.

Latham made several acquisitive moves in the City in 2018, including a number from magic circle firms. Significant hires included Allen & Overy infrastructure partner Conrad Andersen and Clifford Chance infrastructure M&A head Brendan Moylan.

Ferguson's exit, meanwhile, follows several departures from Jones Day's London office last year.

Partners to leave the firm's City base in 2018 included private equity partner Mike Weir, disputes partner Lucas Moore and real estate partner Alex Millar.
