King & Wood Mallesons has hired banking and finance partner Katherine Ke, who was previously Shanghai counsel at Clifford Chance, to help the firm capture cross-border asset finance work as Hong Kong develops into an international hub for finance and aviation.*
Ke, who will be based in Hong Kong, specialises in cross-border financing transactions, including syndicated loans, project finance, structured finance, trade finance and receivables finance, as well as asset finance and the aviation sector.
Ke leaves Clifford Chance after more than a decade with the Magic Circle firm in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, as well as a secondment in 2008 to the London office; she was promoted to counsel in Shanghai in 2014. Earlier in her career, Ke was an associate at Chinese firm Fangda Partners from 2002 to 2005.
In January, aviation and asset finance partner Ashley Wong also joined King & Wood Mallesons' Hong Kong office, after 16 years with Mayer Brown. Richard Mazzochi, King & Wood Mallesons' head of banking and finance in Hong Kong, said in a statement that Wong and Ke will help capture cross-border asset finance work as Hong Kong develops into an international hub for finance and aviation.
Last year, the Hong Kong International Airport, which connects to more than 50 cities in China, handled about 74 million passengers and more than five million tonnes of cargo and air mail, making it the world's busiest cargo airport for the eighth straight year and the third-busiest international passenger airport.
Clyde & Co also hired former Holman Fenwick Willan aviation partner Peter Coles in Hong Kong earlier this year and said the firm will be significantly investing in its Asia aviation team in the near future.
*Updated June 5: This article has been updated to clarify that Katherine Ke was counsel at Clifford Chance. The headline and lead have been changed to reflect that.
