Pinsent Masons has hired Bird & Bird attorney Alexander Shepherd as a technology, media and telecommunications partner in Singapore.

Shepherd specialises in commercial, regulatory, technology, media and telecommunications matters in Hong Kong and southeast Asia, for financial services providers and insurance companies. He also advises on cross-border data privacy and cybersecurity matters, including compliance with regulatory regimes and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation.

Shepherd leaves Bird & Bird ATMD, as the U.K. firm is called in the city-state after forming an association with Singaporean firm ATMD. He was with Bird & Bird for three years. Prior to that, he was a partner at Simmons & Simmons for more than nine years in Singapore and Dubai, where he led the Middle East and Africa TMT practice. Shepherd started his legal career at Linklaters, where he practised for nine years in Hong Kong, London and New York.

Florian von Baum, head of the advanced manufacturing and technology sector for Pinsent Masons, said in a statement that Shepherd's experience across financial services, cybersecurity, data and outsourcing will help the firm meet growing client demand for technology-related legal services across Asia.

With the appointment of Shepherd, Pinsent Masons now has 10 partners in Singapore. Earlier this month, the office lost two construction lawyers to Clyde & Co: partner Jon Howes, who led the Singapore office with Mohan Pillay, and senior associate Sean Hardy.

Last month, Pinsent Masons MPillay moved to a new office that is 75% larger than its previous one, as the firm looks to strengthen its presence in the region. The firm also has had a Singapore joint law venture with local firm MPillay since 2007.
