White & Case has hired two merger and acquisition lawyers in Beijing from K&L Gates.
Former partner Grace Fan-Delatour and former counsel Shaohui Jiang join as partner and local partner, respectively. Both focus on cross-border M&A, project development and finance, and private equity investments in the infrastructure, mining and metals and oil and gas sectors.
In 2017, Fan-Delatour represented China's state-owned COSCO Shipping Corp. Ltd. and Lianyungang Port Holdings Group Co. Ltd. on an investment in a Kazakhstan railway infrastructure project as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. She made partner in 2016.
"Growing our M&A capability in Greater China has been a priority for the firm as we look to respond to client demand in the extremely active market there," John Reiss, White & Case's New York-based head of global mergers and acquisitions, said in a statement.
With the hires, White & Case has 12 lawyers, including three partners, in Beijing, according to its website. In addition, Alex Zhang, who took over as China head after the departure of Li Xiaoming to Chinese firm Han Kun Law Offices in 2017, splits his time between Beijing and Shanghai. Last year, White & Case hired former O'Melveny & Myers partner and investigations specialist Bingna Guo but lost finance partner Hallam Chow to Mayer Brown.
Meanwhile, the departures leave K&L Gates with eight lawyers in Beijing, including corporate partners Yujing Shu and Henry Wang. In addition, Hong Kong-based partners David Tang, Jay Chiu, Vincent Tso and Frank Voo, and Palo Alto-based Linda Zhou, also spend time in Beijing.
