A leading corporate partner at Linklaters, Iain Wagstaff, has died following a cycling accident, the firm has announced.

According to the firm, the accident took place on the weekend of August 31.

In a statement following his death, senior partner Charlie Jacobs said: "It is with enormous sadness that we can confirm the death of Iain Wagstaff, a partner, friend and admired colleague at the firm.

"The firm's thoughts are with Iain's family as well as with his many friends at Linklaters and beyond the firm. Iain was an exceptional lawyer and a great friend to me and so many others. He will be very greatly missed."

The 44-year-old was a well-known figure within the corporate practice. In 2017, Wagstaff co-led a team advising a buyout consortium on an offer for challenger bank Shawbrook, and he was known to act for clients such as Investec.

Wagstaff had worked at Linklaters for more than 20 years, acting on numerous multimillion- and billion-pound deals including advising PSP Investments on its investment in the £2.2bn Silver Lake-backed offer for ZPG; Engie on its €20.2bn reverse takeover of International Power and subsequent €9.5bn cash offer for the minority stake; and ION Investment Group on its £1.5bn recommended offer for Fidessa group.

He is survived by his wife and two children.
