Ropes & Gray has become the latest U.S. firm to make up fewer partners in London as part of its latest promotions round, making up just one lawyer to partner in the city.

Private equity lawyer Elizabeth Todd, who featured in Legal Week's Rising Stars list for private equity last year, is the sole London lawyer to have made the cut out of a 16-strong global round.

Last year, the firm made up two lawyers in London, although one of those was based between London and another office.

In 2016 and 2017, the firm made up two London lawyers to partner.

All of this year's other partner promotions were in the firm's New York, Boston and Chicago offices.

It means no one in Ropes & Gray's Asia offices made partner either, although one person has been made counsel in Hong Hong. Last year, the firm promoted people to partner in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

This year's promotions, which take effect on November 1, will also mean that 30% of Ropes' partnership will be made up of women, with nine women and seven men making partner globally this year.

The firm has followed in the footsteps of other U.S. firms to promote a reduced number of London lawyers to partner this year. White & Case made up three London lawyers – the fewest to be promoted in the city for a decade – while Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton did not make up any London-based lawyers to its partnership in its latest promotion round at all, instead promoting just one London lawyer to a counsel position.

Update: This article has been updated to show that two partners were promoted in London last year, not three as originally stated.
