Dentons has appointed a managing partner from Italy to its global board.
Federico Sutti, who led the openings of the firm's Milan and Rome offices in October 2015 and July 2016 respectively, succeeds John Flanigan as a member of the 39-strong global board.
Before launching Dentons' practice in Italy, Sutti was DLA Piper's managing partner in Italy for 12 years.
''The global board plays a critical role in driving innovation and delivering value to our clients, and Federico, who was instrumental in establishing Dentons' successful Italian presence, will be a terrific addition to the group," Joe Andrew, global chairman of Dentons, said in a statement.
Elliott Portnoy, global CEO of Dentons, added that the global board "is relentlessly focused on building a more inclusive and diverse firm", and said he is confident Sutti will make a strong contribution.
Sutti said he was "excited to be a part of this esteemed group", which has representation from every region within Dentons and is "open to embracing the changes necessary to adapt to the quickly evolving legal profession".
Sutti said he expects further concentration in the competitive legal market in the near future and that Dentons is well positioned for this trend because of its ability to "work with clients on local standards", while having the global platform of the firm's network.
He explained that Italy has three times as many lawyers as France and twice as many as Germany, despite having similar-sized legal markets. This has led to downward pressure on fees and made the Italian market unattractive to Magic Circle firms.
Dentons' practice in Italy has grown from 21 lawyers in 2015 to more than 150 now, Sutti said, and its global offering has enabled it to position itself as a leading law firm in Italy.
In September, Dentons appointed Wendela Raas, managing partner in the Netherlands, to its global board.
Dentons has been steadily expanding its presence in continental Europe in recent years. It recently added lawyers to its Amsterdam office and has also increased headcount in Düsseldorf, Germany, Rome and Milan.
