Kirkland & Ellis is closing in on a Clifford Chance (CC) private equity partner, as the Chicago leader prepares for its long-awaited German launch.

The firm is believed to be close to hiring Volker Kullmann, a partner at the magic circle firm's Munich arm since 1999, to spearhead the launch of Kirkland's first German base, according to local press reports.

The private equity specialist, one of Munich's best-known corporate lawyers, will be regarded as a significant appointment for Kirkland.

Kirkland has been keen on launching in Germany for many years as part of a bid to extend its respected LBO practice into continental Europe. Partners at the top 25 US firm last month backed plans for a German-law launch.

The German push is being overseen by German-qualified London partner Thomas Verhoeven, who will relocate to the new office.

Neither Kirkland or CC would comment.
