Baker & McKenzie has made up 71 lawyers to its partnership around the world, including one in London, bringing total partner headcount at the firm to almost 1,500.

The promotions round represents a rise of eight on last year, when 63 were made up, with the 71 new partners taking total partner count across the firm to 1,450.

Of this year's new partners, 32% are female, an increase on last year's figure of 29%. The firm earlier this year set out its intention to double the proportion of women in its equity partner ranks.

The sole London promotion is corporate tax lawyer James Wilson (pictured), who has been made up after 11 years at the firm. During stints in both the firm's London and Washington DC office, he has developed a practice focusing on UK and European inbound planning for multinationals. Earlier this year, he acted for Best Buy on its £500m sale of the remaining 50% of the Carphone Warehouse Europe to Carphone Warehouse.

"James is a great addition to our partnership," said Paul Rawlinson, who today takes over from Gary Senior as London managing partner. "I have no doubt that, as a partner, he will make a strong contribution to the future success of our tax practice, the London office and the firm."

Broken down by region, EMEA took the lion's share of promotions with 25, with 19 in Asia-Pacific, 18 in North America and nine in Latin America. By practice, M&A saw the largest number of promotions with 20, while tax and dispute resolution have seen partner count boosted by 15 and nine respectively.

The promotions are effective as of today (1 July).

In addition to the promotions, the firm has made 60 lateral partner hires across its offices in the last year, including a number joining the firm as a result of new office openings in Seoul, Lima, Abu Dhabi and Casablanca.
