Kirkland & Ellis has promoted 13 London associates to partner, more than double the amount it made up in its City base last year and the largest ever on record.

The new partners come as part of a global promotions round that has seen 97 associates make the grade around the world, marking an increase on last year when the firm made up 81 lawyers.

This is the largest ever London promotions round since the firm first opened its doors in the capital in 1994.

Last year, the firm's London arm saw six partners made up – the smallest number since 2012. In 2015 and 2014, the firm promoted eight City lawyers.

The new City partners include Andrew Butel in government, regulatory and internal investigations litigation; Mark Ingram and Frazer Money in tax; Philipp Kurek in litigation; Jeremy Leggate and Aranpreet Randhawa in investment funds; Jon Newman in arbitration; James Simpson in capital markets; Adam Skinner in financial services regulatory; and Christopher Wall in debt finance.

The office's M&A and private equity practice gained the most new partner additions, with Mark Thompson, Jacob Traff, and Rebecca Villarreal all being made up.

In the US, the firm added 25 new partners in its Chicago office, five apiece in Houston and Los Angeles, one in Palo Alto, 10 in Washington DC and eight in San Francisco.

Its Hong Kong office, meanwhile, has been boosted by six new partners.

Meanwhile, Covington & Burling has announced its own partner promotions, with the US firm making up two in London. Tax lawyer Guy Dingley and intellectual property lawyer Mark Young join the ranks of the firm's City partners.

Overall, Covington promoted 16 lawyers, with 13 made up in its domestic US offices and one lawyer promoted in Seoul.
