Reed Smith has made up five lawyers to partner in its London office in its latest round of promotions.

Three of the new City partners are women – real estate lawyer Joanna Carter, shipping lawyer Antonia Panayides (pictured) and energy lawyer Elizabeth Farrell – while the other two London promotions are employment lawyer David Ashmore and IT and data protection lawyer Philip Thomas.

Last year, the US firm also made up five lawyers in London.

Around the world, the firm has added a total of 23 lawyers to its partnership, marginally down on last year's intake of 25.

Reed Smith's US bases have received the vast majority of this year's appointments, with 17 lawyers promoted to partner across the firm's domestic network of offices.

Ten of the group are female, representing 43% of the total intake.

Global managing partner Sandy Thomas said: "The firm's new partners represent a broad cross-section of our global platform and of our industry and practice groups. These individuals have distinguished themselves as talented lawyers who put Reed Smith and their colleagues first and who are vested in helping our clients achieve success in their business endeavours."

Last November, Legal Week revealed that Reed Smith is currently considering converting its London office to an alternative business structure as the firm eyes up the possibility of joint ventures and profit-sharing arrangements with non-lawyer businesses.
