Legal software provider Exterro Inc. will join the Information Governance Initiative (IGI) aiding in the groups' collective goal of raising awareness on the best practices of data governance. Exterro officials said in the March 11 announcement that the company will bring its experience with in-house legal data management and discovery projects to a community of information governance pioneers.

Considering that the world has moved from an environment where a gigabyte of storage was considered “more-space-than-you'd-ever-need” to one where users can create many times that in an afternoon, the need for deeper understanding on how to manage and maintain a growing volume of data has peaked. IGI's mission is to provide businesses with benchmarks and education on this critical issue, helping them achieve information best practices—before it's too late.

“There is a real lack of clarity and education on how to handle corporate information, who should manage the process and where to even begin,” said Bennett Borden, founder and chair of IGI and chair of the information governance and e-discovery group at Drinker Biddle & Reath. “We are committed to moving the industry forward, together, establishing best practices, bridging existing gaps and connecting all of the facets of the IG equation. Having established leading vendors like Exterro as members is a critical part of our efforts.”
