There are many reasons why the costs associated with document searches are increasing.

For instance, recent efforts by government officials may lead to higher data search costs related to litigation and discovery. One example are requests for audio files from telephone recording systems – and even video files – by such regulators as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. And even though it has yet to be approved by Congress, a bill to revise the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) regulations will likely mean a further need to review documents – especially to avoid the risky release of financial, healthcare or personal identifying information by companies.
