Lawyers and others wanting to see advancement in legal technology are watching the new government in Canada to see if more spending is on horizon.

Purchasing new technology for Canadian courts and government offices did not get a lot of attention in the recent election won by prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau after defeating incumbent Stephen Harper. But at least some legal professionals say there is a clear need for tools and other investments to allow for more use of e-filing, e-trials (where most documents relating to trial records and evidence are filed electronically), and cloud storage, according to Susan Wortzman, founder of Toronto-based Wortzmans, where she provides e-discovery and information management advice to lawyers and businesses.

Looking back, she said the Harper government did “very, very little” regarding the purchase of new legal technology tools for the courts and government offices. “We can only hope they (Trudeau's incoming government) can do better,” Wortzman told Legaltech News.
