The demands and challenges general counsel face depend largely on the business and industry in which they operate. In the technology industry, for example, GCs are often an integral part of a company’s business team, tasked not only with navigating the company through legal battles and regulation, but also helping to grow and direct its core business operations.

Cushing is vice president, chief commercial officer and general counsel at software provider Pegasystems, a software developer that leverages artificial intelligence and automation technologies. It is a role that Cushing has worked toward throughout his career, previously providing counsel to tech companies as a partner at Boston-based law firm Bingham McCutchen.
