Depending on the state an enterprise operates in, cybersecurity can be an expensive and complex compliance necessity—or little more than an afterthought. Such wide divergences between state laws, and the fact that compliance with a patchwork of cybersecurity statutes is a challenge for many companies, has fueled talk of the need for federal cybersecurity standards. To date, such a standard has yet to appear.
