Legalweek is historically one of the busiest times of the year for legal technology announcements, and 2019 is no exception. Already in the weeks leading up to the show, we've seen a host of new product announcements, software upgrades and tweaks, and even an M&A deal or two.
With so much going on, it's next to impossible to keep up with everything—even for LTN. That's why we're doing a quick rundown of some of the biggest news that's hit our inbox in the past couple of days from a host of legal technology companies. It's by no means an exhaustive list, but just a glimpse at what you'll be able to catch at the show in a few days.
Of course, we realize that the announcements aren't even close to done. There are a number of other legal tech announcements that will be made during the show, and we'll do our best to cover them all with another roundup of news coming late next week or early the week of February 4.
Thanks as always for reading!
Casepoint: At Legalweek, the e-discovery company will be demoing the Casepoint Platform, an enterprise-scale application development and deployment environment built upon web APIs and an N+1 scalable architecture. The company says the platform, which includes Casepoint eDiscovery, will double processing speeds and provide users of the interface with near-instantaneous speed. Casepoint eDiscovery itself also has seen a remodel, promising increased flexibility and integration from database setup to data processing and all the way through to the end of discovery.
CloudNine: The first Legalweek following CloudNine's acquisition of Lexis's e-discovery suite sees a host of product upgrades for the company's suite. The version 7.0 release of CloudNine's LAW pre-discovery software offers a new multi-core, multi-threaded “turbo” ingestion engine designed to process and load data faster than ever. CloudNine Concordance release 10.23 and FYI release 5.15 comes with several new features, including an ability to generate an attachment range for production images and search for documents with redactions. Early Data Analyzer is also being renamed CloudNine Explore, and includes multi-processing support for PST/OST, MBOX, and DBX mailstore formats.
Compiled: The newest version of litigation support and e-discovery software ReadySuite is looking to be a bridge between CloudNine's LAW pre-discovery software and e-discovery engine Relativity in an attempt to simplify data imports. The bridge can exchange information and field data from one platform to the other and overlay that data in the system. Other improvements to ReadySuite include a new advanced script editor, with code completion and hint capabilities, and nine new prebuilt e-discovery scripts.
DISCO: The growing e-discovery company announced yesterday an $83 million investment round, which it says will be used to grow its suite of products both outside of e-discovery and internationally. For immediate new products to expect, CEO Kiwi Camara told LTN's Rhys Dipshan, “We'll start [growth] first with a product called Case Builder, which addresses handling disputes, investigations, and litigation from the day the client walks through the door all the way through the final resolution. And second, by taking to market our DISCO AI review offering, which is automated finding of evidence powered by DISCO AI technology.”
Elevate: Alternative legal service provider Elevate announced last week the acquisition of technology and managed services company Yerra Solutions, expanding its international borders to include Yerra's Switzerland headquarters and offices including Singapore, Hong Kong and Poland. Yerra is the fourth company Elevate has acquired in the past four months, also including legal AI technology and consultancy LexPredict, contract lifecycle management provider Sumati Group, and UK NewLaw legal resourcing firm Halebury.
FileTrail: Looking to expand information governance further in the organization, FileTrail is launching file share connectors for its FileTrail GPS (Governance Policy Suite). This aims to allow law firms to manage files, including organized and unorganized data, contained in all file shares within its network. FileTrail CEO Darrell Mervau said in the company's release that the upgraded FileTrail GPS has the “ability to apply both internal policy and OCGs across multiple data platforms, along with its automated retention and disposition and its advanced matter mobility tools.”
Hanzo: The e-discovery company Hanzo is bolstering its archiving capabilities with the release of the new platform Hanzo Dynamic Archive. Using native versions of web content rather than converting to PDF, Hanzo Dynamic Archive aims to securely investigate, capture, review, and produce electronic communications as part of e-discovery and regulatory compliance workflows. Kevin Gibson, CEO of Hanzo, said in a release that static PDFs are “not good enough from an evidentiary and authenticity perspective because you lose the most important information. The power of native format is in the fidelity and the context of the record.”
Intapp: Intapp has released the latest version of its Walls security solution. Dubbed Walls 7.0, key additions include market-leading performance enhancements to support closed security models, new extensions for data management applications, real-time activity tracking and user experience enhancements. The solution looks to provide, as Intapp put in a release, the ability to make “application system changes as required—whether due to mergers, version upgrades or migrations to cloud-based solutions—with uninterrupted risk solution coverage.”
Lawclerk: On-demand legal service provider Lawclerk has announced the official launch of a new service called “Teams,” which it hopes will allow law firms to build trusted networks of freelance attorneys to work with on an ongoing basis. The new service essentially allows Lawclerk users to save freelance attorneys to a team that can be categorized by practice area or project. Talitha Kozlowski, co-founder of Lawclerk told LTN that Teams is a way for small and solo law firms “to access a variety of legal talent. … You can build your own virtual team of associates and expand as much as you want.”
LDM Global: Consultancy LDM Global is launching its own Managed Document Review Service, aimed at providing a flexible and scalable e-discovery solution for those looking for results at a lower cost than outside counsel. The release includes what LDM calls “end-to-end e-discovery services,” with the document review team in India headed by attorney Rashmi Kishore. The service is just now seeing its public launch, though LDM said in a release that several of its clients have already utilized the solution.
ONE Discovery: ONE Discovery has released its new SaaS e-discovery offering, named EC3. Running off of the Amazon Web Services cloud, EC3 aims to deliver an enterprise system at a fraction of the cost. The solution boasts unlimited user access, analytics at no additional cost and faster processing power. Elie Francis, founder and CEO at ONE Discovery, notes, “Leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) and built on industry-leading foundational technology, EC3 is available at three price points based on usage so e-discovery teams never have to pay for more than they need.”
Templum Markets: Templum Markets, a primary issuance and secondary trading platform for smart securities, and IPwe, a global patent transaction platform, are teaming up to launch a patent finance market for Fortune 500 and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The two are looking to create an new financing framework, enabling companies to finance their patented intellectual property. IPwe developed AI and Hyperledger-based tools needed to identify, research, maintain and transact in patents, and the resulting securities will trade on Templum Market's platform.
Tikit Carpe Diem: The maker of timekeeping application Carpe Diem is adding to its offerings a solution called Intelligent Time, which interprets freeform text or dictated notes and converts that speech into structured and fully validated time entries using natural language processing. The AI-enabled upgrade, which is a finalist in Legalweek's Product Innovation Competition, aims to give what Tikit North America president Peter Zver calls “a true conversation between the application and the user.”
Vable: Looking to help lawyers keep up with their clients, Vable is releasing Vable Connect, which allows users to create bespoke news alerts for each of their clients. The alerts can be automated or manually curated, and delivered via branded emails or accessed on a clean client portal. Vable Connect sits on Vable's core platform, which combines aggregation, AI, indexing and publishing capabilities. The idea for the platform, the company says, came out of Allen & Overy's Fuse incubator, in which Vable took part in 2017.
Workstorm: Collaboration technology provider Workstorm is looking to integrate time management into its workflow solutions with new upgrades focused on attorney calendars. The new calendar integration functionality allows users to create, access and view calendars directly from within Workstorm, send or receive meeting invitations through email or messaging and schedule and launch Workstorm's videoconferencing system. It also allows integration with outside calendaring options within Workstorm's environment.
Zix: Known primarily for email security and archiving, Zix is expanding beyond emails to add 48 different business communication channels to its ZixArchive solution. The cloud-based archiving now covers alternative forms of digital communication spanning social media, instant message, mobile, web, audio and video, aimed at covering compliance issues for regulated markets. The new upgrade also adds a layer of advanced e-discovery capabilities, including message review, classification, data tagging, and the ability to cull messages based on content.
