A global pandemic may seem like the opportune moment for governments to press pause on the enforcement date of data privacy laws, but that isn't the case for all jurisdictions. To be sure, general counsel were already struggling with growing data privacy regulations before COVID-19. A recent survey published by Ethyca and TechGC found 56% of corporate legal leaders believe their company is not prepared to comply with data privacy laws. But as new data privacy laws are set to go into effect, some countries are acknowledging the pandemic's business disruption by extending deadlines, while others have said the original deadlines remain.
