To avoid completely shutting down legal proceedings, court systems across the U.S. have adopted more remote proceedings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Supreme Court, for instance, upended tradition when it moved oral arguments to a telephone-based venue for the first time in its 230-year history. Still, many courts went a step further than the Supreme Court by moving proceedings onto Zoom and other video conferencing platforms. The launch in some parts was shaky, however, with many courts having their fair share of hiccups. Above, we look at the hacks, roaming jurors and attorney faux pas that are hampering courts' transition to an all-digital environment.
