Is the goal always to gain new customers with a M&A? Not quite, say legal tech companies. 

Instead, the factor largely motivating legal tech's M&A deals is what benefit the proposed combined company would deliver to customers. However, even prior partnerships can't save a deal if tech and leadership hurdles are found. 

"We always like to bring in more customers into the mix, but what we are trying to do is [make sure] that the [clients] can achieve value from the combined product," explained Mitratech CEO Mike Williams. On July 31, the enterprise legal and compliance technology provider announced it acquired immigration management solution platform Tracker Corp.
