Months into the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are still trying to manage the economic fallout—which in some cases includes layoffs. Thanks to social media, many of those departures are taking place on a very public stage, where corporate legal departments may have to help their organizations balance the reputational damage that comes from saying either too much or too little at all.

“The legal aspect might very well be what do you put in writing? How do you communicate the bad news to your employees, and what is the mechanism for doing that?,” said Rita Heimes, general counsel for the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
