Kathleen Sweitzer, who recently became the first general counsel of Maestro Health, talks about how technology providers in the health care space can get ahead of their data compliance obligations and what legal departments really need from their outside counsel.

Maestro Health Inc. may have been in business since 2013, but it was only last March that Kathleen Sweitzer joined the tech-enabled third-party administrator in Chicago as the company's first general counsel. The move places Sweitzer at the center of an increasingly complex regulatory environment, where she'll have to balance Maestro's interest in leveraging data for health care innovations against the risk of regulatory scrutiny.
Fortunately, she's not new to health care. Sweitzer's last job was as associate general counsel of U.S. health solutions at Aon, where she regularly provided advice on regulatory compliance issues. At Maestro, Sweitzer will help the legal team think not only about where they need to build on their risk management structure but also try to anticipate potential uses for data that haven't even left the drawing board yet.
