Mental health problems and substance abuse have long plagued the legal industry. According to findings from an ALM survey, depression, anxiety and substance usage might be a bigger challenge than previously thought. More than half (64%) of the 3,800 lawyers and staffers surveyed said they had anxiety, while 31% said they felt depressed, according to ALM's "Mental Health and Substance Abuse Survey" released in February. Somewhat unsurprisingly, in an immensely competitive industry with grueling hours, technology hasn't become a work-life balancer for all. Indeed, 73% of respondents said they can't disconnect from work even while vacationing. Industry observers said smartphones and laptops keep lawyers constantly tethered to their clients and firm to the detriment of their own health. Above, Legaltech News highlighted the ways in which technology is making attorneys' mental health challenge worse, while also helping to address them head-on.
