Small and midsize law firms are slowly beginning to embrace cloud technology, according to a recent survey from legal IT consulting provider LogicForce. But even as they leverage more cloud-based tools, some firms aren't updating their cybersecurity practices to match evolving digital threats, the survey noted.

LogicForce released its "2021 Law Firm IT Scorecard" on Jan. 13 after surveying 200 IT directors and managers, chief information officers (CIOs), chief technology officers (CTOs) and other IT decision-makers at boutique and midsize U.S. law firms, which LogicForce defined as 20 to 200 attorney firms.

Of the firms surveyed by LogicForce, most (61%) said they used legal-specific practice management systems with cloud capabilities. This significantly contrasts with the American Bar Association's "Legal Technology Survey Report" released in October 2020. Last year, the ABA found only 13% of attorneys at small firms and 11% of respondents from 100-plus attorney firms used legal-specific project management software
