(Did my title make you smile? We could all laugh more these days!)

Technology, at its core is just something that transforms inputs to outputs. Machinery, software, and human expertise are all technologies. Businesses in every industry vertical, including legal, rely upon supply chains of technologies. Law firms and law departments do not have all the technology they need in-house to serve their clients. They rely upon outside technologies to get work done.

Many technologies sit behind the scenes. However, when law firms use outside technologies that are client-facing but wear the firm's brand, we call this "white labeling." White labeling can be a great way for firms to build upon established strengths of third-party resources while retaining control over quality and cost for clients. Worthwhile innovation initiatives should improve a law firm's ROI; white labeling can be a great way to test new offerings quickly with little up-front investment.
