One downside to an increasingly global economy is that companies are now grappling with dozens of varying rules and timelines for the renewal of trademark protections. While this may be a headache for businesses, it could be a real opportunity for intellectual property docketing services looking to expand—if they can handle the sheer volume of data involved when taking their operation worldwide.

"There's a significant barrier of entry because you need all of the right resources and the talent to pull this off. The volume of data is significant," said Nehal Madhani, CEO of Alt Legal.

Earlier this month, Alt Legal announced that it had partnered with intelligence provider Clarivate to gain access to data from 186 trademark offices situated across the globe. That same data—such as the presence or absence of a certain document or code in a given jurisdiction—will be fed into an algorithm created by Alt Legal that automatically calculates a filing deadline for the renewal of trademarks.
