Chin Up, Legal Departments—There's a Few Routes to Ensuring Vendor Security
It's not just their own cybersecurity that corporate legal departments have to worry about anymore. Instead, in-house teams may find themselves monitoring vendors' own security precautions with both one-off and ongoing checkups.

CybersecurityNo corporate legal department is an island when it comes to data security. Wednesday's "Not If, but When: A Data Protection Roadmap for Legal Teams in a Post-Pandemic World" panel held during the Legality Symposium 2021 delved into how important it is for in-house teams to monitor and enforce their outside providers' cybersecurity measures.
For example, while many organizations may rely on a cloud service provider to safeguard their information, it doesn't mean that they'll necessarily be immune to public scrutiny or even regulatory action should a breach occur.
"You can't just rely on your cloud service provider. … You have to make sure that you are safeguarding data because the buck eventually stops with your organization," said panelist Rishi Chhatwal, assistant vice president, senior legal counsel, antitrust and enterprise e-discovery at AT&T.
