There’s no time like the present—unless of course that present happens to be unfolding against the backdrop of a global pandemic. Nevertheless, Tomu Johnson decided to open his new, two-attorney law firm, The Broad Axe, in June, confident that more than year spent working from home adequately prepared clients for a virtual—and subscription-based—business model.

The Utah-based firm will focus on privacy and data management, subjects that Johnson became well acquainted with during his time as an attorney with Parsons Behle & Latimer and CEO of the firm’s tech subsidiary Parsons Behle Lab. As for why he wanted to open a new law practice in the middle of the pandemic, the answer is twofold: Johnson, who is part African American, wanted to add another African American firm to the landscape.
