As the aftershocks of the pandemic continue to drive rapid changes to both employment law and the ways companies do business, some firms may be turning to automation and information portals to help keep up with clients' urgent demands for guidance. But those efforts could be stymied by the fact that many firms still haven't quite figured out how to monetize legal knowledge that is disseminated via technology.

Of course, it can help to have a tech subsidiary. SixFifty, the technology arm of law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, released its automated 50-State Hiring Paperwork tool Thursday, with pricing starting around $200 per month. The solution automatically generates documents such as disclosures, noncompetes and nonsolicitations that are compliant with the laws of whatever state a company happens to be sourcing a new hire.

Kimball Parker, CEO of SixFifty, noted that the tool's development was prompted by client demand, which has intensified as the pandemic normalizes the concept of a full-time remote worker. "We had one client who had employees in one state and now has employees in over 20," he said.
